From October 11th-13th 2021, the 17th Congress of the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) took place in Athens as well as Online and the VIGOUR project has been part of it.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been highlighting challenges in care provision that affected health and social care systems worldwide and shed light on the necessity of ensuring continuity of care in exceptional situations, while simultaneously protecting especially vulnerable population groups. The consortium of the VIGOUR project recently joined forces in order to collect experiences and perceptions on the pandemic and draw some preliminary lessons learned on the potential and effectiveness of integrated care to meet challenges like COVID-19. The results have been published within in a perspective paper in the International Journal of Integrated Care in October 2020 (see: https://www.ijic.org/articles/10.5334/ijic.5596/). Interested readers will notice that the preliminary COVID-19 experiences within the VIGOUR project can be classified into three different types of innovation needs that comprehensively influence the context-related care integration focus of VIGOUR regions: the need for technology-related innovation, such as remote service delivery; the need for quarantine-related innovation, such as cross-service guidance for home isolation; and the need for care pathway related innovation, such as clinical management of COVID-19 patients and suspected cases.
In this context, the valuable insights gained from VIGOUR project partners were presented as a digital poster at the previous EuGMS Congress, which will be available on the congress platform until December 31st 2021 and creates the opportunity to once more reflect on the preliminary experiences gained during the project so far and enter into a fruitful exchange with peers. As the VIGOUR project has entered the next phase in the meantime, and regional integrated care pilot projects have already been kicked-off, the joint perspective paper and digital poster presented serve as solid basis for further experiences to be expected by VIGOUR partners in this regard.
The annual congress of the European Geriatric Medicine Society provides an occasion for the scientific community to learn about, present and discuss significant insights of healthcare, science and research in the field of geriatric medicine (see: https://www.eugms.org/home.html). VIGOUR partners, stakeholders and interested parties are always warmly welcome to join the event!
